About Mowlana Association
Mowlana Association has been founded by a group of members of the Mowlana community living in Sri Lanka.
The term Mowlana is traditionally used in Sri Lanka to address the progeny of our beloved holy Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihiwasallam.
The term actually represents the Ahlul baith or the Saadaaths or in other words Thangals as they are called in Kerala.
All these terms refer to the same progeny.
The Mowlanas living in Sri Lanka are spread over several districts with the highest concentration in and around Colombo.
The districts of Matara, Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota have a fair concentration with several other districts too
containing a few of them. In the known contemporary history the Mowlanas were known to be involved in teaching and
spreading the word of Islam rather than indulging in commerce and trade or other socio economic activities.
This does not mean that they shied away from such activities but as a whole they were vastly religious and tried
to contain themselves within that sphere.
However that situation has slightly changed with the emerging times and the Mowlanas are now well established in
all areas of the socio economic and political fields as well with established businessmen amongst them and some of them
occupying very high political pedestals.
In general the ratio between the elites and the economically feeble ones is high and this disparity has resulted in a
large section of them being in straitened circumstances. This situation and the absence of an organised representative
forum to look into their needs had been the cause for many eminent members of this community to form an association to
provide assistance in an organised manner. Several such attempts in the past had not produced the desired results.
These attempts eventually culminated in the formation of this association.
The objectives targeted by them is to reach out to all the Mowlanas living in all parts of the country
and bringing them together under one umbrella. Many objectives have been envisioned with the aim of
uplifting the living standards. They are planning to provide leadership to its members beyond the
geographical, social, educational and economical disparities by promoting self-awareness, technical
skills and academic development at various levels. At the inception, areas such as education, health
and employment are to be prioritised. Educating them about their duties and responsibilities
shouldered by them as a result of the title 'Ahlul Baith' conferred on them by Allah is also of
paramount importance and this will be addressed through lectures and workshops.
Alhamdulillah the association is in it's infancy but showing immense possibilities as the members have
displayed unprecedented empathy and commitment. This association has caused vast sections from far
apart to join hands in organised efforts towards uplifting the living standards of the less fortunate
members of the community.
There is immense hope and anticipation amongst a wide cross section and efforts are being made to reach out to every member
living in all parts of the country. May Allah tha'ala and His beloved Rasool and seal of prophethood Muhammad sallallahu
alaihiwasallam bless everyone of the members in their efforts and guide us all in the right path. Aameen!
